Izabella Gustowska

Izabella Gustowska was born in 1948 in Poznan. She graduated from the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Poznan in 1972. At present she is a lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan, where she heads the Workshop of Multimedia Actions in the Chair of Intermedia, at the Zielona Gora University Faculty of Multimedia Communication, where she conducts classes in the Workshop of Intermedia Graphics in the Graphics Department of the Institute of Fine Arts (until 2007), and at the State Higher Vocational School in Glogow, with majors of Art Education. In 1991 she was appointed an extraordinary professor.

She belongs to the most interesting Polish artists applying the video technique. Since 1976 she has taken a very active part in workshops and artistic projects related to the combination of diverse media and means of expression, ranging from para-theatrical and musical projects to performance and installation with the use of video and camera transmission. Her works are grouped in cycles developed in various techniques, initially in the area of graphics, painting, and relief, then in multimedia: Relative Similarities, Dreams, Sources, Floating, Life is a Story.

In the period 1970-1978 she was a member of a Poznan-based group of young artists “Od Nowa”. In 1979 she started to run the ON Gallery, which she headed until 1983 together with Krystyna Piotrowska, in the years 1984-1986 and 1989-1990 – by herself, and between 1991 and 1994 along with Slawek Sobczak.

She is a laureate of numerous print competitions and renowned international print biennales and triennales (Krakow, Bradford, Ljubljana, New Delhi, Fredrikstad). She is a holder of awards and mentions of honour for her paintings, drawings and textiles at international exhibitions. She has received twice the Art Prize of the City of Poznan. She participated in the XLIII Biennale in Venice (1988) and in over 300 collective shows in Poland and abroad. She has had over 50 solo exhibitions and presentations.

She has been a scholarship holder of Prof. Emilio Vedova in Venice, of the Fund for the Promotion of Fine Arts (twice), of the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada, of the San Zanobi Foundation, Italy, of the Central Saint Martin’s College of Art in London, and of the Polish Ministry of Culture and Arts (a few times). She has been involved in community initiatives; among others was a member of the Chapter of the Art Prize of the City of Poznan at the City Council and of the Fine Arts Council at the Minister of Culture and Arts. She is actively involved in the work of her Alma mater (e.g. was a Vice President for Teaching in the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Poznan, delivered a solemn laudation in honour of Gary Hill during the ceremony of granting him an honorary doctorate of the Poznan Academy of Fine Arts). She has been awarded many prizes and state orders for her artistic output and teaching projects.

Izabella Gustowska’s works can be found in state and private collections, the major of which are the Graphische Sammlung Albertina and the Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig in Vienna, the Academy of Art and Science in Zagreb, the Centre de la Gravure et de l’Image Imprimée in Brussels, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the National Museums in Wroclaw, Poznan, Warsaw, Szczecin, and Gdansk, the Museum of Art in Lodz, the District Museum in Bydgoszcz, and the Muzeum Ziemi Lubuskiej in Zielona Gora.
